MICHIGAN, Manistee CD – For over a decade, the Manistee Conservation District (MCD) has helped residents responsibly dispose of hazardous chemicals, thereby preventing toxic household items, pharmaceuticals and pesticides from winding up in landfills or groundwater.

The program began in 2006 as a collaborative effort between Manistee, Mason Lake and Oceana Conservation Districts, which comprise the regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) committee.

Susan Spencer, executive director of the MCD, said, “We run this event concurrent to the other conservation districts. It’s always the third Saturday in August and it’s been increasingly successful.”

MICHIGAN, Manistee CD — When voters passed a millage for the Manistee Conservation District in 2014, they quite literally breathed new life into the organization…On Aug. 7, in the state primary election, the Manistee Conservation District (MCD) will ask county voters for their continued support through a proposed millage renewal.

“In early August of 2014, the Manistee Conservation District was 18 months away from most likely closing its doors for good,” said Susan Spencer, executive director of the Manistee Conservation District. “There was very little money to pay for staffing, the building’s infrastructure was in major need of repair, and its services — once robust — were dwindling.

“Conservation districts once served their communities in significant ways. However, due to diminished funding over the last several decades, conservation districts have struggled to stay in operation,” she added. “I like to say that the 2014 millage really brought the Manistee Conservation District back from the brink of extinction.”
