NORTH CAROLINA, Onslow SWCD – A Swansboro Middle School headed outdoors Wednesday for a lesson with a community impact. The eighth graders in Melba Corbell’s math class traveled down the road to Swansboro Town Hall to help the North Carolina Coastal Federation build a rain garden that will naturally reduce stormwater run-off from the town hall complex. “This is teaching us a way to help the environment and shows that little things can make a big difference,” said student Amber Matthews as she and classmate Jaden Boone worked placing plants in the rain garden.

During their hour-long field trip the students split their time at the rain garden and learning more about the techniques the town has used on site to reduce stormwater run-off that contributes to the pollution of area waterways.

For the rain garden, the Coastal Federation has partnered with Onslow Soil and Water Conservation District, which will reimburse the federation for materials purchased for the project. According to the Coastal Federation, the project funding is also being matched by the N.C. Division of Water Resources’ EPA Section 319 Water Quality Program.

Tyler Karcher with Onslow Soil and Water Conservation said the approximately $2,500 funding they provide is through the Community Conservation program.

“This is a great way we can help educate the community about protecting water quality,” Karcher said.
