OHIO, Ottawa SWCD – When the fiscal year closed for Ducks Unlimited just over a month ago, there needed to be some extensive measuring, figuring, and calculating done to arrive at the number that represents the grand total for the work the organization did in the Buckeye State between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

Ducks Unlimited put $3.3 million to use in Ohio in that time frame, supporting a variety of conservation projects. DU was able to conserve 2,585 acres of waterfowl habitat with those funds,

Through partnerships with the Ohio Division of Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, along with several grant sources, DU helped restore or enhance nearly 250 acres of wetlands on private land in northwest and northeast Ohio. The Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District was also involved in the projects in the northwest region.

OHIO, Ottawa SWCD — Education Specialist Becky Simpson of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District has been on a mission recently, visiting classrooms with hands-on activities, engaging students in topics such as geology, weathering and erosion.

She recently taught rock formation and identification to 4th graders and shared how many rocks are used in everyday products, such as toothpaste, food and video game consoles.

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District wants to encourage more teachers to reach out for agency programs. Simpson said they are excited to help teach science in every classroom and can even bring its Augmented Reality Sandbox.
