CALIFORNIA, RCD of Tehama County – Calling all high school students, the Resource Conservation District of Tehama County seeks Tehama County high school students to join the annual Speak-Off Contest, which offers cash prizes for first, second and third place.

The district is one of nearly 100 Resource Conservation Districts all over California. The contest is created by the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts to spark interest in districts’ work throughout the state. With a different topic each year, the statewide contest remains relevant and engaging for both the student speaker and audience.

This year’s speech topic question is, “Why do we need to act to save the monarch butterfly? What can RCDs do to help?” Students prepare a 3- to 5-minute speech in response to the two questions and present it to a Red Bluff audience on Thursday, Oct. 3.

CALIFORNIA, RCD of Tehama County – The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Office of Environmental Farming and Innovation recently announced its grant awardees for the Healthy Soils Incentives Program and the State Water Efficiency Enhancement Program.

The Resource Conservation District of Tehama County provided Climate Smart Agriculture technical assistance to a variety of Sacramento Valley agricultural producers during the open enrollment period for both grant funding opportunities.

Staff engaged in one-on-one assistance with nine producers for the soil application, of which seven submitted applications and four were awarded grant funds. Funding of as much as $75,000 per agricultural operation was awarded to implement on-farm practices that improve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and store carbon. The program is part of the California Climate Investments associated with the state’s cap and trade proceeds.
